speechless.
When have you been speechless? Why?
Was it in a moment of pure joy? Complete shock? Awe? Being dumbfounded? Something that took your breath away? There are so many moments – good and bad – that can leave us speechless.
Have you ever been so caught up in your thoughts, buried in your emotions, or depleted of energy that you are unable to develop a sentence, let alone a word, in prayer and conversation with the Lord?
I have.
I have sat in the presence of my Father without a single word.
At some point, I have a moment of semi-realization that I’m just sitting there without anything to say, and I think, “I have no words to say. I don’t know what to pray.”
I was having one of those moments today, and the Holy Spirit brought me to Romans 8. I started reading and flipped the page. My eyes landed on verse 26.
“…We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
- Romans 8:26 NIV
Wow. Again, speechless. But this time in an awe and amazement sort of way. God’s has so much truth we can cling to in every moment – even those of being speechless in the presence of the Lord.
This also gave me so much assurance and comfort in this moment of intimacy with the Spirit. The Sprit of God who lives within me knows my every thought. In this moment – He directed me to His Word to show me exactly what I needed! I didn’t ask. I didn’t say anything. I simply thought “I don’t know what to pray.”
How incredible is it that we have the power of the Spirit of God within us, and He can direct us to answers in God’s Word. This shows how living and active the Word of God is. God’s Word doesn’t apply to the past alone. His Word usurps time and space. It is able to speak into every moment.
So for you, my friend, you who loves God and is called according to His purpose, when you don’t know what to pray, know that the Spirit himself is interceding for you. He searches your heart. He works all things for your good. It’s okay to be speechless.
